Regarding Civil Right to Counsel Washington
State Access to Justice Conference – June 10, 2006 Washington equal justice advocates held the state’s 11th
annual Bar Leaders/Access to Justice Conference which included a number of
events of interest. Former ABA President Michael Greco delivered the conference keynote
address, which may be viewed or listened to via the links below. The
introduction starts roughly 18 minutes into the program and his comments begin
at 23:45. Also, the conference’s plenary session, attended by at least four
of Washington’s state’s supreme court justices, was devoted to “Crafting a
Vision for the Civil Right to Counsel in Washington.” At the session,
Justice Earl Johnson and Deborah Perluss delivered thoughtful and passionate
presentations while Paula Boggs, general counsel for Starbucks, and Mary Kay
Becker, a state appellate judge, offered their insights into the challenges that
will face efforts to implement the right. Like President Greco’s speech,
the plenary session can be heard by clicking the links listed below.
